Principles into practice
Sense
International (India) exists to support deafblind people and their families throughout
India. We aim to improve the quality of life for deafblind people by working with
partner organisations, helping them develop their own deafblind programmes and
building their capacity to ensure the sustainability of these programmes. We are
striving to ensure that there are needs based and appropriate services available
throughout India to enable deafblind people to gain more control over their own
lives.
Sense International (India) was established in 1997
as the first overseas programme of Sense International (UK), the world's largest
international organisation for deafblind people and their families. Sense International
(India) is part of an alliance of Sense International programmes that are operational
in more than 20 countries.
Over the years there has been
steady and incremental growth, in terms of programmes and size, and to date we
have supported activities in more than 17 States of India with more than 30 local
partners, including- NGOs, governments, families and professionals.
Sense
International understands that deafblindness creates specific difficulties particularly
in communication, mobility and access to information. Whether deafblindness occurs
from birth or later in life, people often need specialist knowledge, skills and
assistance to overcome the difficulties they face.
Working
with our partner organisations our aim is to provide the information, guidance,
support and training needed. We also encourage our partners to offer services
that are designed to help deafblind people follow their preferred lifestyle and
enable them to be part of their local communities.
Sense
International (India) is committed to helping deafblind people and their families
by raising awareness and campaigning for rights, opportunities and services throughout
the nation. We value the participation of deafblind people and their families
in identifying these needs. We actively seek and encourage networking among deafblind
people, families and teachers to form a parallel force with Sense International
(India) and its partners in campaigning for rights and opportunities for deafblind
people.
We recognise our staff as a valuable resource and we are fully
committed to ensuring positive work practices, training and staff development.
We work with a wide range of local partner organisations and we are committed
to ensuring that these partners have the technical and material resources they
need. Our overall aim is to deliver a high quality of service and support in the
most cost-effective way as possible in response to local needs.
