The Helen Keller Institute in Mumbai was established in 1977
as the first organisation in India to develop education programmes
for deafblind children. It focuses on developing the skills
of deafblind children and young adults and supporting their
integration into society. The institute has a special residential
school for deafblind children, with students from different
parts of the country.
The organisation is one of the first to have partnered with
Sense International (India) in implementing a special programme
for deafblind young adults.

It has been recognized by Sense International (India) and
all its project partners that with the increasing number of
programmes in India, there must be enough qualified staff
and teachers working in these programmes. Accordingly a comprehensive
curriculum for teacher training was created with the help
of professionals, practitioners and partner organisations

running the first Teacher Training Course in Mumbai with support
from Sense International (India).

course has inputs from international teachers and experts.
