Deafblindness is a unique disability - a combination of both vision and hearing loss. A deafblind child is both deaf and blind. For many people it is difficult to imagine what it must be like to be blind or deaf; it is almost beyond our comprehension to imagine what it is like to be both deaf and blind. Yet throughout the world there are hundreds of thousands of deafblind people - babies children, young adults and old people. Some children are totally deaf and totally blind, others have small degrees of sight and hearing. Since 95% of what we learn comes through what we see and hear, deafblind children face enormous challenges in communication, mobility and learning even the most basic skills. Yet with the right support and education it has been demonstrated in programmes all over the world that deafblind people can learn to communicate and can become full and active members of society. Many deafblind people have jobs, have friends, are married and so on. But it has to be others in societies who are prepared to change their ideas and give appropriate support for this integration to be possible. Registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950. |
