Clarke School for the Deaf & Mentally
Retarded, Chennai, Tamilnadu
The Clarke school was established in 1970 with the aim of
giving rehabilitation services to the hearing impaired and
intellectually disabled children. The organisation based in
Chennai in south India has special schools for hearing impaired
and intellectually disabled children. In addition it has a
special centre for deafblind children and a rural extension
programme for reaching out to rural disabled children. It
also implements various government schemes for the disabled
and provides free diagnostic services.
Sense International (India) is supporting a day care centre
for deafblind children at the Clarke School.
The Clarke School Teacher Training Course
With increasing number of programmes for deafblind in south
India, a need for more qualified staff and teachers working
in these programmes was identified. Educators from south find
it difficult to go to Mumbai, hence, the second Teacher Training
Course approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India is
being run by the Clarke School for the Deaf Chennai with support
from Sense International (India).
